Job Summary
DRS Naval Power Systems (NPS) a multi-site operation responsible for $350 million of revenue with locations in Milwaukee/Menomonee Falls, WI, Bridgeport/Danbury, CT, Fitchburg, MA, High Ridge, MO, and Marlo Coil, with an employee base of approximately 1000 employees. NPS is structured into four Lines of Business focusing on supporting the power and propulsion needs of the U.S. Navy: Surface, Submarines, Nuclear instrumentation & Controls. We provide engineering, manufacturing, and lifetime support of our highly engineered products.
Join our Menomonee Falls, WI team as a Manufacturing Design Engineer. We are looking for some to provide an interface between the various design functions, procurement, manufacturing, and quality control for early engagement in new design development and legacy products. You will be involved with the product design development and manufacturing processes to improve the Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, and Service of our products and devices.
Our ideal person will compile and evaluate process or product design and legacy data to identify potential risks and develop solutions with existing processes or products and make product modifications and design improvements as needed. We are also looking for some who will evaluate and recommend design or process approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products or processes.
What You Will Do
- Responsible for coordinating with a group of engineers on completion of technical activity on time and budget
- Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems
- May use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments
- Ability to lead a technical group independently
- Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction develops designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable
- Provide budget, cost, and schedule input for design assignments
- Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems, and services
- Drive the program design-to-cost and design for manufacturing requirements
- Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
- Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
- Participates in preparation of proposals
- Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
- Lead and direct the work of others as assigned
- Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization
- Other duties as may be assigned
Education & Experience Requirements
- BS in Engineering or equivalent education and experience
- 2-5 years’ experience as a manufacturing/industrial/mechanical/electrical engineer
- Ability to communicate ideas, both verbally and in writing; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Visio desired
- Experience reading wire schematics, technical drawings, and mechanical prints
- Experience creating work instructions, routings, and instructions for assembly
- Knowledge of 3 phase power systems, power electronics, control systems, switchgear, motors, Motor Generator sets, programmable controllers, electromechanical energy conversion and synchronous machines
- Knowledge of Military specifications and knowledge of Navy electrical systems desirable
- Knowledge of Manufacturing Engineering to ensure Process Capability for MAKE items
- Knowledge of Supplier Quality/Development Engineer to ensure Process Capability for BUY items
- Knowledge of Design Transfer readiness and how this relates to phase review discipline for design and development programs
- Knowledge of CAD tools, specifically NX desired
- Experience with Failure Modes and Affects (PFMEA/DFMEA) and other Quality Tools, such as Mistake-Proofing/Poka-Yoke
- Candidates must be a US citizen and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment
