Job Responsibilities

As a Leonardo DRS Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will:

  • Design & Fabrication: Engage in hands-on experiences with mechanical and electro-mechanical components, from initial design to fabrication and modification. Explore areas such as Mechanical Analysis, Aerodynamics/Fluids, Thermal, Fluid Systems, and Mechanical Packaging.
  • Innovate Solutions: Evaluate and recommend innovative design approaches to enhance product performance and meet production needs. Solve real-world product and process challenges.
  • Daily Engineering Tasks: Support the engineering team with routine duties and tackle hands-on projects. Develop your independence and engineering skills through daily tasks.
  • Building & Enhancing: Help design, build, and procure new or enhanced machines, tools, and fixtures. Play a key role in coordinating their implementation to streamline processes.
  • Process Documentation: Take responsibility for completing crucial process documentation, including part and assembly drawings, bills of materials, and more.
  • Project Review: Review project instructions and drawings to identify test specifications, objectives, and possible solutions. Support design for manufacturing by evaluating technical problems.
  • Component Assembly: Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified electrical and/or mechanical components or assemblies. Become an essential part of our innovation process.
  • Testing & Analysis: Set up and conduct tests on units and components under guidance. Analyze test results and make adjustments to meet design and test objectives. Document procedures, results, and recommendations for improvements.
  • Data Documentation: Record testing procedures, numerical and graphical data, and propose changes to enhance products or test methods.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist in creating documentation for maintaining equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the development of plant layouts and manufacturing methods. Lead initiatives for process improvements and efficiency boosts.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be actively enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate or master’s program in Mechanical Engineering or a related tech field
  • Requires a minimum of two years of academic experience with a GPA that shines as bright as your ambition – 3.0 or higher!
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling (Creo and/or SolidWorks)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • A strong problem-solving mindset driven by intellectual curiosity
  • Self-motivated and proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Proficiency in MS Office 365

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Some familiarity using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software
