Job Summary

The Materials Director is responsible for providing overall leadership and guidance to an organization that ensures components, subsystems, and services are delivered to Leonardo DRS production factory sites to support production needs and financial goals, at optimal efficiency. Equally critical responsibilities include leading a supply chain procurement organization to meet all FAR CPSR requirements as well as a strategic sourcing function that develops and exploits key supplier relationships and strategies that enable pursuit of new business at higher PWIN and profit targets. This leader must work effectively in a fast-moving, dynamic business environment to understand program level schedule, cost, and business requirements and manifest these requirements into an integrated and cohesive direction to a materials and planning organization as well as the supply chain function.

A deep understanding of the critical aspects of production material demand planning and scheduling of a project to achieve operational and financial targets is required. This position has a particularly heavy emphasis on working collaboratively with operations, program management, finance, engineering, and supply chain in all aspects of materials management to include: material proposals, material planning, master scheduling, materials procurement and execution, and materials finance. The ability to synthesize numerous data sources and clearly articulate programmatic needs and challenges along with cross-functional engagement within Leonardo DRS operations to enable successful program execution and delivery of finished goods is critical to success. This role involves critical monitoring and management of demand, supply and associated constraints, status reporting and escalation, and critical supplier engagement when appropriate. Ensuring timely, high integrity proposals as well as the subsequent baseline planning of material plans to optimize margin and working capital positions is paramount to successful business execution. 

The relentless pursuit of operational excellence and continuous improvement as well as experience in the overall proposal, planning and procurement process in a DoD regulatory compliance environment is required. 

Job Responsibilities

  • A functional leader that can build a strong organization and collaborate effectively with other functional leaders. An integrated and valued member of a business leadership team to develop and clearly communicate integrated plans to ensure successful execution and overall management of materials. 
  • Provide the necessary leadership to develop a strong team of planning and scheduling professionals to ensure the overall execution of material and operational delivery commitments on schedule and on budget for a business area.
  • Collaborate with program management, finance, operations, engineering, master scheduling, planning, and supply chain professionals to:
    • Oversee and manage the scheduling and demand planning process to ensure all production, programmatic and financial goals are achieved. Drive process and practices to achieve 100% On Time Delivery.
    • Develop and execute an entitlement model by program to minimize variances (cost and schedule) while positively impacting cash flow and inventory.
    • Analyze and ensure accuracy and completeness of material plans and schedules.
    • Create and deploy supplied material requirements to the purchasing function via MRP to achieve production, inventory, and cost objectives. Ensure material demands for all projects are supported appropriately. 
    • Manage planning system parameters and master data to optimally reflect supply chain lead times and abilities, profit and working capital goals, as well as factory requirements.
    • Proactively manage long lead material items and other schedule and cost risks related to materials while monitoring and minimizing creation of excess
    • Analyze system data and supplier PO status to deliver material clear-to-build status, material coverage, run-out reports and other analyses as needed. 
    • Provide data-driven decision support to the broader organization through what-if and scenario planning.
    • Analyze and manage performance to material budgets by working closely with finance and supply chain in the material EAC (estimate at completion) process.
    • Manage engineering changes to minimize obsolete inventory and ensure continuous supply.
    • Work collaboratively with the supply chain procurement function to enable critical supplier execution and performance to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.

Job Responsibilities (cont.)

  • Ensure the necessary skills and talent are in place for an effective strategic sourcing function that develops and exploits key supplier relationships. Partner with the Business Development and Program Management functions to leverage these key supplier relationships to pursue new business at higher PWIN and profit targets.
  • Ensure the necessary processes, training, and systems are in place to meet all DoD, FAR procurement regulations and CPSR system requirements.
  • Ensure compliance as well as capability development in the supply chain function to all current and future FAR and DFAR cyber-security requirements.
  • Partner with IT, Planning, Supply Chain, and other business stakeholders on planning process and system improvements. 


  • 10+ years of experience in DoD programs and/or materials management
  • Working knowledge of MMAS and Materials Estimating requirements related to DoD and FAR
  • Strong domain knowledge and background in DoD FAR procurement regulations with an emphasis on preparing a purchasing organization and system processes to enable government CPSR certification is critical. This includes cyber-security requirements and compliance with the supply base necessary to meet CPSR audit requirements. 
  • At least 5 years of experience in a production manufacturing operation utilizing a flagship MRP/ERP system such as Oracle, SAP, Deltek, etc.
  • Bachelors or Masters in Supply Chain, Finance, Engineering and/or equivalent experience and evidence of ability. CPIM or APIC training is a plus.
  • Knowledge of MRP/ERP with a solid understanding of electronics and/or electro-mechanical assembly operations, bill of material, demand material planning, and the supply chain purchasing process.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills in developing, implementing, and assessing key operational and financial metrics. Strong critical thinking and resolution skills in ambiguous situations. 
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze data to enable operational decision making and present clear recommendations to leadership.
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively collaborate in a fast-paced. cross-functional environment including program management, engineering, planning, quality, purchasing, finance, and general management.
  • Passionate and high energy with the diplomacy and cooperative style necessary to positively influence others
  • Ability to write, speak, and present effectively and persuasively
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks and projects in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Flexibility and adaptability are key skills for success.
