Job Summary
Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a full time Principal Electrical Engineer. This position is based out of our Goleta, CA facility and will have the option to work an in person or hybrid schedule. This position will review customer specifications and requirements, develop concepts and designs to best support them, including conceptual packaging with cost and schedule as key design variables. It will lead internal design teams and be the primary technical interface to other DRS subsidiaries when power system expertise is needed. The position will design, develop, analyze, document, select and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems with a focus on power electronics and power generation equipment.
The selected candidate will have demonstrated experience in power electronics design and development experience including AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC power conversion equipment ranging from 100 to 30 kW, 3.3 to 600 VDC, and 120/208VAC. Experience with batteries and energy storage systems are a plus and familiarity with military specifications related to power is plus.
Job Responsibilities
- Serve as Power Systems Subject Matter Expert
- Review customer specifications and requirements, develop concepts and designs to best support them, including conceptual packaging with cost and schedule as key design variables
- Support Business Development in the pursuit and capture of new business
- Leader of internal design teams. Primary technical interface to other DRS subsidiaries when needed supplying power system expertise
- Design, develop, analyze, document, select and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems with a focus on power electronics and power generation equipment
- Specify and evaluate supplier components, sub-systems, proposals and services. Prepare Statement of Work and component/system requirements documents
- Drive the program technical performance, design to cost, schedule and design for manufacture requirements
- Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
- Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
- Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
- Interact with technical management, other professionals, technicians and support personnel to coordinate, recommend and confer regarding technical activities and progress
- Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
- Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings
- Mentor and coach less-experienced engineers
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field
- 8+ years of electrical design experience
- Demonstrated power electronics design and development experience including AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC power conversion equipment ranging from 100 to 30 kW, 3.3 to 600 VDC, and 120/208VAC. Familiarity with military specifications related to power a plus
- Experience integrating equipment into and onto military power systems such as 28VDC ground vehicle systems, 480 VAC 60Hz Naval systems and 400Hz aircraft systems a plus. Experience with batteries and energy storage systems a plus
- Familiarity with engine driven generator systems required. Experience with military vehicle electrical systems, architecture, and cabling design a plus
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC control best practices. Experience with EMI/EMC testing and bringing non-compliant hardware into specification. Familiarity with MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 a plus
- Demonstrated experience in the preparation and delivery of product briefing material for internal and external customers
- Ability to assess and determine the compatibility of hardware components of a system. Must have experience interfacing hardware components into a complete specification compliant system
- Understanding of heat transfer and component cooling as related to power systems and components
- Must have knowledge on and experience with circuit simulation applications
- Must have knowledge on and experience with Circuit Card design and CAD applications (experience with ALTIUM a plus)
- Experience developing Interface Control Documents (ICD) that define a system’s requirements and performance
- A strong mechanical aptitude is a plus
U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
The salary range for this position is $119,940.00/year- $161,919.00/year for the state of California. This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate’s qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for: annual performance-based bonuses, equity awards, and overtime pay (for non-exempt employees as applicable.
