Job Summary

The Digital Hardware/Firmware Engineer II will assist in the design, development, analyzing, verification, and validation of digital electronic products, systems and subsystems including signal and radar processing systems, network communications, electronic warfare systems, and air combat systems. This position offers some remote flexibility plus a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off)**

Job Responsibilities

  • Involved in the design, development, analyzing, verification, and validation of digital electronic products, systems and subsystems including signal and radar processing systems, network communications, electronic warfare systems, and air combat systems
    • Participate in requirement decomposition/definition/clarification, system design, and system verification
    • Responsible for design description documents creation, design revision control, and archival of design files for digital electronics development
    • Participate in the generation of test and verification plans establishing functional criteria to ensure requirements are correctly implemented
    • Participate in the execution of verification plans and assist in development unit and system testing
  • Responsible for some aspects of FPGA digital logic design, System Simulation, Synthesis, Resource and Power Utilization analysis, Place and Route, Timing analysis, Verification, and Integration activities
  • Involved in the design, build, and test of cutting-edge devices containing both digital and optical hardware


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or other related field with 2+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have experience with firmware development
    • Some experience implementing high-speed interface designs, low power architectures, embedded micro-processing systems, and complex memory designs, including protocols such as DDR, 10G/40G Ethernet, Aurora, and PCIe in networking applications
    • Some experience generating and executing constraint driven synthesis and timing closure techniques
    • Some experience implementing novel DSP algorithms efficiently into FPGA structures preferred
    • Required tools/skills proficiencies include:
      • VHDL, with some familiarity with Verilog
      • Various scripting languages and approaches such as tcl, bash, perl, etc.
      • Mentor Graphics Questa or ModelSim simulation/verification tools
      • Subversion, CVS, GIT, or similar
      • Xilinx Vivado, Intel Questa, Microsemi Libero SoC, etc.


Additional preferred qualifications:

  • Some experience in Digital Hardware design preferred such as:
    • Design and test of cutting-edge electronics containing both digital and optical components
    • Contribute to the integration and verification of digital components, equipment, and systems for major programs and projects
    • Involved in troubleshooting and design updates of existing products
    • Tools/Skills that may be required:
      • Schematic capture, with involvement in PWB/PCB design through layout, fabrication and assembly
      • Knowledge of high-speed serial and parallel interfaces such as 10GBASE-KR/SR, PCIe, DDR4, USB, SERDES, etc.
      • Knowledge of best lab practices and test using high speed measurement instruments such as VNAs, oscilloscopes, BERTs and TDR/TDTs
  • **This position has the option of being either fully onsite in our Germantown facility or partly remote (onsite Tues-Thurs).  Must live within commuting distance of the facility regardless of choice.  (We are moving to Frederick in 2023)
