Summer 2027 Mechanical Engineering Intern- Electronics Packaging
Frederick, MD, US, 21703
Job ID: 115337
The Leonardo DRS Airborne and Intelligence Systems business is a global leader and strategic partner committed to delivering world-class, full life-cycle defense and intelligence products that protect the security of our nation and our allies. From air combat training to state-of-the-art electronic warfare systems, our technology is deployed by virtually all U.S. military and government agencies around the world.
Job Summary
The Engineering Intern will support the Mechanical Engineering team in the design, documentation, analysis, and test support of ruggedized electronic equipment and assemblies, with exposure to electronics packaging, chassis and enclosure integration, thermal-management features, component mounting, drawings, and prototype/test activities.
Our Mechanical Engineering team is small, and our engineers work as full-stack engineers: each is assigned to a program late in the concept phase and carries it through design, documentation, analysis, prototyping, and test — rather than handing pieces off to separate specialists. The intern will be exposed to that same breadth, working alongside engineers across multiple stages of the product lifecycle rather than being confined to a single narrow task. High-performing interns may be considered for full-time employment following graduation, based on business need and performance.
Job Responsibilities
- Work closely with and assist engineers in the conduct of various engineering assignments
- Carry out basic work instructions that will help in understanding the fundamentals of the Company and also learn new things
- Conduct limited scope testing under the supervision of engineers
- Complete assigned tasks on time
- Gather and assemble data for engineers
- May be required to help in research in a particular field
- Conduct design analysis and/or calculations under the supervision of engineers
- Assist engineers with appropriate design details
- Must have good interpersonal skills and have the ability to build a good network
- Perform a wide variety of tasks to gain familiarity with the engineering staff, methods, programs and practices
- Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
- Other duties as assigned

- Engineering student; some progress towards engineering degree
- Must have good interpersonal skills and have the ability to build a good network
- Must be diligent, hardworking, and quick to learn
- Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline
- Completed at least two full academic years of study, entering junior year or beyond. Exceptions may be considered for candidates who can work proficiently and independently in a 3D CAD tool such as Creo or SolidWorks — able to build parts and assemblies without step-by-step guidance.
Qualifications Perferred
- Experience with Creo, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD
- Experience creating or interpreting 2D engineering drawings, assemblies, and bills of material
- Hands-on fabrication experience, such as 3D printing, machine shop tools (mill, lathe, CNC), hand tools, or soldering
- Exposure to environmental or reliability testing, such as thermal chambers, vibration testing, or shock testing
- Hands-on experience through coursework, labs, design teams, prototype builds, or prior internships (fabrication, assembly, testing, or similar)
- Exposure to electromechanical integration, thermal management, structural design, or manufacturing processesComfort working across multiple stages of a project — design, analysis, prototyping, and test — rather than a single specialized task
