Job Summary

The Technical Director will provide engineering leadership for complex, often large, multi-site, multi-disciplinary programs with significant development and complex execution challenges.  This is a non-direct leadership role with minimal direct reporting resources, but significant leadership scope.  This position will enable smooth absorption of the considerable growth NPS is achieving, much across our highly capable LOBs and sites.  This position is fundamental to strategically position NPS to gain and maintain market share.  

The Technical Director will provide engineering leadership by leading technical execution for specific, complex, cross-site/LOB programs as assigned.  The Technical Director will provide this technical leadership, along with instituting procedures to facilitate smooth execution of similar projects, strengthening the organization procedurally and culturally.  The Technical Director will mentor system, project, and lead engineers to facilitate their careers and contributions to NPS. This position will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and VP BD for DRS NPS and directly support various program managers, engineering leadership and LOB VPs, with strong interaction across the DRS Naval Power Systems operational sites.
 

Job Responsibilities

•    Engineering Execution - Responsibility for the engineering execution on complex, interdivisional development programs ensuring robust systems engineering including planning and execution of requirements management, risk management, integration and test, and 
      transition to production. 
•    Process – Responsible to develop procedures, supplementing and extending present engineering procedures for interdivisional program execution
•    Participate on the NPS Engineering Directorate to integrate interdivisional program process with the team
•    Culture – Responsible to continue the collaboration culture across NPS LOBs, and interdivisional (as assigned), seeking common goals and reducing parochialism.
•    Technical Reviews – Responsible for facilitating robust technical reviews in accordance with the gate review process
•    Program Management – Working closely with the program managers, PMO teams, program finance and cost account managers to ensure smooth, on-time, on-budget execution and accurate EACs.
•    Customers – Support the program in engendering and maintaining relationships with customers, including meeting with direct shipyard, commercial and government customers, and forming relationships with technical customers
•    Proposal Development – Support the development of interdivisional proposals by leading the overall complex storyboards for sections to effectively guide author content.
•    Collaboration with:

  • Engineering to collectively develop profitable technical solutions for opportunities
  • Supply Chain to support the development of our suppliers as our technology evolves
  • other LOBs, particularly NPS Machines and Systems for system solutions, ensuring best value trade-offs between component designs selections
  • BD to ensure investments, technical solutions and product road maps are consistent with our bookings plan and strategy

•    Mentoring of other engineers as assigned or who seek you out
•    Support the development of the bookings and strategic and discretionary spend plans
•    Support the identification and development of valuable external business relationships
•    Attend trade shows and support presentations on Company portfolio of products and services
 

Qualifications

•    Bachelor degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
•    12+ years of related experience
•    Technical expertise in engineering and systems engineering
•    Strong indirect leadership skills
•    Expertise in specification development and large subcontract scope
•    Understanding of program management and basic program accounting
•    Strong interpersonal verbal, written, and presentation skills
•    Demonstrated collaborative attitude and indirect leadership skills 
•    Planning, organization, time management skills
•    Ability to develop and leverage relationships
•    Basic knowledge of company markets, products, and technology
•    Results oriented, execution mentality
•    Moderate travel (e.g. >25%)
•    US citizenship required
•    Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance


 Additional Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge
•    Graduate degree in engineering
•    Clear understanding of electric machines and power systems
•    Familiarity with US Navy programs, shipyards and acquisition process
•    Familiarity with military design specifications
•    Familiarity with US Naval Nuclear Program
 

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
