Position Summary

The Electro-Optics and Infrared Systems group provides customers with the ideal combination of performance, innovation, and value for a variety of applications. Become a key member of an integrated product team developing leading-edge, cryogenically-cooled infrared sensors and related military products. Develop technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle of sensor assemblies, including: proposal, concept generation, design, manufacture, integration and test. Research and explore scientific developments in thermal, structural, and vacuum technology, as well as materials and electronics in a collaborative, supportive environment to create innovative results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Independent optical engineering contributor in an inter-disciplinary program team.
• Conduct engineering analyses, design and evaluation of optical systems.
• Validates designs through design verification testing and analysis
• Performs measurements and testing of optical subsystems and components.
• Interfaces and support production to develop and implement designs that improve manufacturability and testing
• Provide technical solutions to various optics related problems.
• Provide thorough documentation of work performed.
• Develop plans and procedures for fabrication of components, and for assembly, test and integration of optical systems.
• Support customer reviews and telecons.
• Serve as technical interface to optical component suppliers. Assist with the procurement and validation of state-of-the-art optical components.
• Works with Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers for prototype and pilot detailed design.
• Provides support to products throughout their lifecycle from manufacturing to customer use by recommending engineering solutions to issues.
• Supports project management by preparing and presenting project status data.
• Writes simple sections of proposals to support development of new business.
• Works under general supervision.
• Defines and conducts simple tests to validate performance of designs to requirements.
• Knowledge of optical tolerancing and requirements
• Participating in and presenting at design reviews.
• You will also be working in a cross disciplinary environment with engineers and technicians from other engineering fields
Basic Qualifications and Required Skills
in Optical Engineering or Physics with 2+ years of experience in precision optics and advanced optical systems for defense applications OR a Graduate Degree with 0-2 years of experience.
• Experience in optical design & analysis tools such as Code V, Zemax, FRED or equivalent.
• Experience with interferometers, test & alignment equipment, and metrology methods is required.
• Laboratory experience with components such as lenses, beam splitters, steering mirrors, sensors (visible through LWIR), position sensing devices, and lasers.
Required Competencies
• Proficient in Code V (desired) and/or Zemax, FRED or equivalent.
• Microsoft Office Suite of tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Working knowledge and understanding of drafting principles per ASME Y14.100
• Candidate is required to attain secret level clearance
Additional/Desired Skills
• Experience in Aerospace / Defense applications
• Experience with infrared imaging sensors, detectors, or focal plane arrays
• Experience with Electro-Optical counter-countermeasures (EOCCM) design and test
• Excellent oral, written and presentation skills for interfacing with senior management and customers as well as mentoring of younger engineers.
• Analytical skills including failure and root cause investigation
• Direct experience in developing detailed mechanical designs and documentation packages for infrared mechanical systems
• Excellent interpersonal, presentation skills, energetic, and self-starter
• Outstanding communication skills - both written and verbal
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and able to react to shifting priorities to meet business need
• Knowledge of laser and other optical metrology systems is helpful, including interferometry, focus variation, and confocal systems and development
• Active DoD issued security clearance
