 Title: Systems/Weapons Safety Engineer II

 

Position Summary:

Systems Safety: Involved with the analysis, design, development and implementation of new and/or existing systems/sub-systems. May include Architectural Design, Requirements Engineering, or others. Determine system specifications. Support acquisition of hardware and software (or subcontractor services as needed).

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for technical activity and completion of assigned task on time and budget
  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems
  • May use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments.
  • Report of progress and status regularly
  • Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable
  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
  • Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
  • Participates in preparation of less-complex proposals
  • May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Collaborate with government personnel, vendors and the user community to ensure the safety of Navy Weapon Systems.
  • Conduct system safety analysis of hardware and software in a variety of US Navy weapons, platforms, and combat systems.
  • Prepare/review/update Technical Data Packages and Presentation Materials in support of Safety Review Board Reviews including the Weapon System Explosive Safety Review Board (WSESRB) and Software Systems Safety Technical Review Panel (SSSTRP).
  • Review System Requirements documentation to identify potential hazardous conditions and make recommendations to system design in collaboration with program staff.
  • Responsible for coordinating, developing, and executing comprehensive technical data packages, Safety Assessment Reports, Preliminary Hazard List, Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Subsystem Hazard Analysis, System Hazard Analysis, Operating and Support Hazard Analysis, Health Hazard Assessment, System Requirement Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Perform operational analysis to identify potential deficiencies in operating procedures, training documentation, maintenance procedures, storage and handling procedures, and/or ordnance handling procedures.
  • Formulating and analyzing System Safety Plans, Safety Management Plans, assessment of hardware and software changes/issues affecting systems safety; Make recommendations to resolve deficiencies and make recommendations to test plans to ensure safety requirements are met.
  • Assess Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and other system change requests to identify/verify safety risks.
  • Perform tasks included in MIL-STD-882E.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-883 (standards for environmental testing for microelectronic devices) , Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH), and AOP-52 (Guidance on Software Safety Design).

 

Secondary Accountabilities:

  • Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a technical related field preferred, or military experience (4 years or more) at E-7 or higher will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5+ years of experience with Risk Analysis, System Safety and combat system/engineering experience.
  • Competent technical expertise and application domain knowledge
  • Ability to work independently

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Weapon Control Systems
  • Experience with Explosives.
  • Experience with Weapon systems.
  • Experience conducting System Engineering Analysis, System Safety Analysis, Risk Management and/or Hazard Analysis
  • Experience/familiarity with MIL-STD-822E, NAVSEAINST 5100.12, NAVSEAINST 8020.6
  • Experience working with US Navy or US Marine Corps combat systems or platforms
  • Experience operating, maintaining, testing, or analyzing weapons systems or complex mechanical or software systems especially those mentioned above
  • Systems Engineering experience with US Navy or US Marine Corps weapons systems
  • Experience preparing technical reports

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting up to 20 lbs.: up to 25% of time  
  • Walking: up to 25% of time
  • Climbing, Bending, Standing, Stooping: up to 10% of time
  • Sitting: up to 75% of time
  • Travel: up to 10% of time

   

AAC works on a 9/80 compressed schedule whereby employees work 80 hours in 2 weeks with every other Friday off.
