Lead Material Handler

Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager Operations, the Lead Material Handler is responsible for and overseeing the loading, unloading and moving of materials as well as the proper inventory,. This role ensures that our material handlers have all materials correctly received, stored, issued, and recorded in the system. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with inventory management systems as well as managing a small team of individuals in a fast-paced manufacturing/production environment. This will be an on-site role reporting to our Bedford, NS facility.

As a Lead Material Handler, your main responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Maintaining accurate inventory records through regular data entry, audits, and reconciliation in the MRP system.
    Ensuring work orders are filled
  • Works under minimal supervision on duties and tasks that are frequently non-routine, adapting procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs 
  • May perform more detailed tasks requiring deeper knowledge and experience in the specified processes and procedures 
  • Effectively communicating with other functional departments, such as Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Sales departments 
  • Ensuring all received materials are properly labeled, tagged, and stored in designated inventory locations according to established procedures.
  • Performing routine cycle counts and assist with full physical inventory to ensure data integrity and identify discrepancies.
  • Investigating inventory variances, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions in collaboration with relevant departments.
  • Monitoring inventory levels and coordinate with Planning and Purchasing to address shortages, overstock, or obsolete items.
  • Collaborating closely with Receiving, Planning, and Production teams to ensure seamless material flow and operational efficiency.
  • Operating material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or hand trucks to transport items safely throughout the facility.
  • Resolving most questions and problems, referring more complex issues to higher levels
  • Serving as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives related to inventory accuracy, storage efficiency, and material handling processes. 
  • Ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and organizational policies in all inventory activities.
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

What you require to be successful in the role:

•    High school diploma or GED required.
•    Valid forklift certification is required or must be obtained.
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
•    Self-starter with the ability to work independently and take initiative.
•    Effective team player with the ability to foster strong working relationships.
•    Excellent organizational and planning skills.
•    Strong time management abilities with the capability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
•    Comfortable handling multiple assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word.
•    Familiarity with MRP (Material Requirements Planning) systems is a strong asset.
