The Leonardo DRS Tactical Systems team develops secure communications and intelligence, information, cyber, electronic warfare and space (I2CEWS) technologies for airborne, shipboard, ground, man-portable, and space applications.  We are the world leader in Intelligence Broadcast System (IBS) based software defined radios and terminals for over 20 years and Link-11 data terminal sets and Link-22 signal processing controllers for over 40 years.  We produce the highest performance electronic warfare systems on the market ranging from ultra-low size, weight, and power man-portable systems to fully networked, multi-site fixed and mobile electronic support and electronic attack systems.  Our systems use state of the art software defined radio, cryptographic, and machine learning technologies developed, integrated, and produced by our team. Job Summary

We're hiring a Software Engineer II experienced in object oriented programming in our Beavercreek, OH office.  Responsibilities will involve primarily working as a member of a team of engineers supporting the development of our Communications and Tactical Terminals product line and the integration of our products into airborne, naval, and ground systems.  Some remote flexibility is allowed plus we work a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off)!

Job Responsibilities

  • Software engineering responsibilities include design, development, simulate, analysis, testing and debugging of computer software and firmware applications and/or systems
  • Other responsibilities may include development with real-time operating systems, database design, operator/machine Interface, networks, and others
  • Required to support the analysis, development, and review of fault isolation and troubleshooting procedures for engineering design; make recommendations for design improvements based on this analysis
  • Involved with the engineering investigation, analysis, and resolution of reliability elements in design, development and implementation of new and/or existing systems/sub-systems
  • Supports engineering with reliability related design analysis, and coordinates issue resolution
  • Perform Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Conduct Reliability analyses, trend analysis, root cause analysis, and determine associated metrics and develop and maintain associated databases
  • Lead the Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) Engineering Process
  • Responsible for technical activity and completion of assigned task on time and budget
  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems 
  • May use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments.  
  • Report of progress and status regularly
  • Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable 
  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
  • Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
  • May participate in preparation of less-complex proposals
  • May provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
  • Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 2 years of experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Proficiency in an object oriented language (C/C++, Java, or C#), C++ preferred
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must be capable of determining hardware compatibility, completing documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance, and interacting with stakeholders to define system requirements.  
  • Understanding of OOA/OOD Software Solutions
  • Operating system concepts, and computer architecture knowledge
  • Understand full software lifecycle
  • Familiar with multi-threaded, and IP socket programming techniques 
  • Practical Knowledge of UML design tools
  • Familiar with Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse, or NetBeans IDEs
  • Able to obtain and maintain a DOD security clearance (current clearance preferred)
  • *This position has the option of being either fully onsite in our Beavercreek, OH office or partly remote (onsite Tues-Thurs).  Must live within commuting distance of the designated facility regardless of choice.


Additional preferred knowledge/experience (nice to have):

  • Embedded Real Time Software experience
  • Good technical writing skills in support of task documentation
  • Understanding of LINUX, Unix-like, and Windows Operating Systems
  • Understand full software lifecycle
  • CMMI Level III experience
  • NSA Certification experience
