Job Summary

A Senior Mechanical Engineer will work as part of or lead a team to delivery large scale projects to the Navy or lead smaller projects that deliver updated motor controllers to the currently deployed US Navy Fleet, including any research and development projects for future technology.  A Senior Mechanical Engineer will also help establish design and process standards for the engineering department, along with train and mentor younger mechanical engineers, which includes college interns or co-ops.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design packaging, component placement, cooling and shock isolation for various power electronics assemblies for electrical cabinets that will be used on the next generation US Naval Vessels.  
  • Once designed, work to satisfy manufacturing and end-customer requirements at the cabinet-assembly level by developing early prototypes (at times utilizing 3D printing technology) to ensure initial geometries/packaging meet expectations.  
  • Continue to develop designs by validating concepts through detailed analysis, lab testing, and customer field testing, which may include shock testing by detonation of explosives to simulate realistic battle situations.  
  • Develop documentation for the design for customer approvals and supplier manufacturing.  Work with vendors to optimize manufacturing techniques to ensure designs are made to account for the latest manufacturing capabilities (DFM – Design for Manufacturing).  
  • Develop engineering schedules with project leadership to ensure product delivery is managed to meet production schedules.  
  • Continue to enhance designs through production lifecycle with latest technology to improve cost, quality, and reliability.
  • Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems 
  • Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments
  • Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
  • Drive the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements
  • Develop prototypes to retire key development risks
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
  • Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization


  • BSME or equivalent education and experience, MSME desired
  • 8+ years’ experience of mechanical design and packaging of electronics.
  • 3D CAD experience, NX preferred
  • Design optimization of mechanical systems utilizing simulation techniques that specialize in structural analysis.
  • Experience with design to cost and design for manufacturing methodologies
  • Experience with tolerance analysis and the design of moving assemblies.
  • Design optimization of structures utilizing FEA in Ansys and/or Abaqus.
  • Candidates must be a US citizen and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable of design/production of bus bars, aluminum, and steel enclosures
  • Design experience with metal-enclosed switchgear and electronic power conversion products.
  • Design experience with MIL standards or for US NAVY applications
